I lost my Logitech MediaPlay Cordless Mouse’s receiver during my last business trip. Although it is no longer the greatest mouse in the world, it served me really well. The battery life is amazing. I’ve own it for many years and only changed the battery for less than 5 times. It has all the multimedia buttons that I need, and works perfectly.
I am also using uberOptions to enhance the functionality of Logitech’s setPoint.
I have other wireless mouse by Logitech, MX900 BT. However that mouse is not meant for notebook. The mouse works fine if it’s connected to non-Logitech-docking-station, however, it doesn’t play nicely for the other buttons and I could not get it to work properly in setPoint configuration. It requires to use its docking station for full functionality.
Now I am back to cheap corded Dell’s mouse for my laptop
. Once you are start using wireless mouse, there is no way you want to go back to the corded one. Same here for me.
I am now looking for a new mouse that somewhat similar with my previous mouse, or has the following functionalities:
- standard 3 button mouse: left click, right click, middle click with scroll
- Left/right scrolls/tilts (middle scroll)
- Back/forward buttons
Since I’m falling in love with the flexibility that setPoint+uberOptions offer, I’m going to stick with Logitech Mouse.
My eyes are fallen into 2 mice that Logitech offers:
Logitech VX Revolution
VX Revolution seems like a good replacement for me. It has all the required buttons plus extra buttons (zoom-/+ and search buttons), which I can mapped into something else.
The receiver is the micro receiver, it is smaller than the MediaPlay one, but it’s not the smallest one available today (see VX Nano’s receiver below). The receiver can be stowed inside the mouse when you are travelling.
The mouse is small enough to be carried around, but not too small for my hand. It feels comfortable in my hand.
Oh, did I say it looks elegant?
Logitech VX Nano
VX Nano is an outstanding mouse in terms of design and foot-print. The nano receiver is perfect for me, since my main computer is a laptop. I do not need to worry to unplug the receiver since it’s very small.
However, the scroll wheel cannot be clicked (as a middle button). For me this is a big disadvantage, since I use middle click for many things, such as opening a new tab in Firefox.
It does have a search button right underneath the scroll wheel, which probably I can map it as a middle click. However it is still not the same as having a middle click on the scroll wheel.
The placement of the back and forward buttons are also weird. it’s not conveniently on the side where usually pressed by my thumb. With the placement in that area, they have to be pressed using my index finger, which not as convenient compare to pressed by my thumb.
Combining the two world
VX Revolution has the perfect mouse, VX Nano has the perfect receiver. Combine the best of the two world, it will be a mouse that’s hard to beat by other competitor. But as of right now, I have to find a more suitable mouse for me.
PS: does anyone know if we can use other logitech receiver? (example: use vx nano receiver to use with vx revolution mouse)
Update:
I found the receiver and happy that I still can use that mouse. It has been served me well and still is.
